Some of the winners and finalists

NEW champions were crowned as Inverclyde’s tennis aces served up some close matches in the local finals.

The Greenock and District Championships were held at Fort Matilda Tennis Club at the weekend. Organisers decided to start Saturday’s matches early because of the weather forecast, and this proved to be a master stroke with all the finals completed before heavy rain descended.

Calum Roberts

Calum Roberts became the new men’s singles champion after an epic battle with fellow Fort Matilda player Mark McGrath. Calum eventually came through 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

There was another close match and a new champion in the men’s veterans’ singles contested by players from Ardgowan. Matt Smith defeated Callum Gerrard 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 with a championship tie-break for the third set.

Matt and Callum then went on to win the veterans’ doubles title with a convincing win over Roy Fraser and Martin Foley.
