THE 71st Greenock and District tennis championships are throwing up some surprises.

With many of the singles competitions now in their latter stages, there have been some great matches.

Men’s singles top seed and former six times champion Jim Lyon lost an exciting semi-final to Mark McGrath in a final-set tiebreak.

Mark will play two-time holder of the title and the beaten finalist over the last two years Calum Roberts, Calum aiming to make it third time lucky and a third title.

More than 30 children and teenagers entered the junior events with a few also entering the adult competitions. Twelve-year-old Callum Charteris won the under-16s competition and has also made it through to the under-18 final where he will face Dylan Crawford.

The under-14s final also features Callum against James Dickson and will take place later this week.

Results from the junior competitions are:

Under-eights winner: Jake Murray; runner-up Archie McDowall

Under-nines winner: Oscar Boyce; runner-up Ronan Erskine

Under-10s winner: Oscar Boyce; runner-up Jayla Kepler

Under-12s winner: Oliver Boyce; runner-up Natalie Johnstone

Under-16s winner: Callum Charteris; runner-up James Dickson

Veteran men’s singles finalist Matt Smith awaits the winner of the semi-final between Callum Gerrard and Fraser Erskine.

Finals will be held at Fort Matilda Tennis Club on Friday (26 July) at 6.30pm and the afternoon on Saturday (27 July).
