YOUNGSTERS in Inverclyde will be given a once-in-a-lifetime swim class with a Scottish pool hero this weekend.

Record-breaking athlete Duncan Scott will join scores of children to celebrate the success of the area’s Learn to Swim framework which has reached almost 1,500 local kids.

More than 75 children are expected to take part in the lessons and question-and-answer session with the Learn to Swim ambassador on Saturday (24 August) at Gourock Outdoor Pool.

The Learn to Swim Framework, which teaches children of all abilities from birth upwards, is delivered by Inverclyde Leisure, in partnership with Scottish Swimming and Scottish Water.

Steven Low, swim school co-ordinator at Inverclyde Leisure, said: “Kids and staff alike are excited to welcome Scotland’s champion swimmer through the doors. He’s such a great role model for the children.”

Duncan Scott is an Olympic medallist, World, Commonwealth and European Champion. He won six medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia last year — the most won ever by a Scottish athlete at a single Games. He also recently set a new British record for 100 metres freestyle of 47.8 seconds.

Euan Lowe, chief executive at Scottish Swimming, said: “It’s fantastic to see how successful the Learn to Swim Framework has been in Inverclyde, with kids from birth upwards learning a key life skill and discovering a love for the sport.”

Brian Lironi, director of corporate affairs for Scottish Water, said: “We’re proud to support this programme as it equips children with skills that will help them to be safer in the water — whether at their local pool, at the beach on holiday or even just out and about around Scotland’s miles of coastline, rivers and lochs.”
