THE search has started for the Inverclyde sports people who excelled in 2016. Nominations are being sought for Inverclyde Sports Personality Awards.

The nine categories are Senior Sports Personality of the Year; Junior Sports Personality of the Year, Disabled Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Club of the Year, Team of the Year, School Team of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year (up to age 25) and Adult Volunteer of the Year.

Nominations can be made on the awards website www.inverclydesportspersonality.com and need to be in by Monday 13 March.

The awards dinner will take place in Greenock Town Hall on Friday 12 May.

The awards are organised this year by West College Scotland, New Horizons Marketing, Inverclyde Council’s Active Schools team and 8digital with help from Inverclyde Leisure and others.

On behalf of the organisers Chris Jewell said: “Last year’s awards produced a record number of votes and some very worthy winners.  This year we have introduced a new category — Club of the Year — as we are aware of many clubs who have had great years as opposed to individual teams for which Team of the Year is the relevant one. It all promises to be another great evening.”

New sponsors this year are VA Business Solutions and Ogilvie Homes. Other sponsors are Morton in the Community, sportscotland, Inverclyde Council, Inverclyde Leisure, West College Scotland, the Oak Mall Shopping Centre, ICE by Buckleys and Toast Scotland.

Martin Duffy, commercial operations director of VA Business Solutions said: “VA Business Solutions, a local consultancy company, are very pleased and privileged to be part of this wonderful local event showcasing all that is good about Inverclyde, to be able to get involved and sponsor the Disabled Sports Personality of the year, and recognising the high level of sporting talent in this area.”

Sandy Ogilvie, director of Ogilvie Homes, said: “We are pleased to be a part of these great local awards going forward, helping to showcase Inverclyde’s sporting talent in this way.”
