Inverclyde Now Logo HIGH Turnout For New Year’s Day Parkrun

3 January, 2019 | Local

GREENOCK parkrun celebrated New Year’s day with 173 people taking part in the five-kilometre Esplanade run, the second highest attendance since its first event in May 2014.

The good weather certainly played a favourable part, with 30 first-timers and 10 people improving their times. The first five runners were all home in under 17 minutes with a further 17 all under the 20-minute mark.

Those achieving personal bests were David Tamburini, Jon Hammerman, James Tosh, Paul Beaton, Elliott Ward, Lorna Ward, Alexander Diez Robertson, Rhona Turnbull, Alison Smart and Sarah Parkinson.

The opportunity to complete two parkruns in one day comes only once a year — on New Year’s Day. Colin Carnson was one of the keen runners to do the double. After starting his day at Strathclyde at 9am, he came down to Greenock for the late 11am start. Colin is currently working through all the Scottish parkruns and is well on his way. Greenock was number 36.

He was even persuaded to finish off his running day in style by taking part in the local New Year one-mile hill race, The Lyle Mile, organised by Greenock Glenpark Harriers, at noon.
