Inverclyde Now Logo GOLF — Whinhill Holding Jimmy Lang Memorial Event

31 May, 2017 | Sport

NEARLY 200 golfers will compete in Whinhill Golf Club’s Jimmy Lang Memorial Charity Gents’ Greensome Open competition this Sunday (4 June).

The competition, now in its 34rd year, is named after one of the club’s greatest members. Over the years, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised from the playing of the competition, with proceeds donated to the Provost’s fund, for distribution to needy causes in the Inverclyde area. The competition has been one of the most respected competitions in the Renfrewshire golfing calendar because of the esteem Jimmy Lang was held in far and wide.

This year will unfortunately be the tenth Jimmy Lang Memorial Trophy competition since Jimmy’s passing in July 2007, at the age of 86.

Jimmy spent more than 60 years contributing to sporting activities for others in the Inverclyde area. He served the local football community for more than 25 years before serving the local golfing community as match secretary at Whinhill from 1970 right up until his death in 2007. In this role, Jimmy was instrumental in the creation and running of many inter-club competitions, leagues and events.

This year the competition is as popular as ever with a full entry for the Greenock club’s most important event of the year.

The 2017 main sponsor is Regency Doors and Stairs (Scotland) Ltd.
