WHINHILL Golf Club’s top players battled it out over 36 holes for the 16 qualifying spaces in the knock-out stages of the Club Championship.

The last 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are being played over the duration of this week, culminating in the final which will be held over two rounds on Sunday.

Thirty-six competitors took part in the qualifier with the best score of the first round coming from Kevin Gray with a one over par 69. Defending club champion John Donald was a shot back on 70 and young Aaron McCue a further shot back on 71.

The best score of the afternoon came from John Donald whose round of 68 was particularly impressive, as the wind had picked up significantly making conditions less than ideal. Stephen Donald posted 71, the second best score of the second round, with Sean McLaughlin and Jamie Sinnamon both shooting 72.

The draw for the last 16 (which includes five former club champions) has come up with some interesting matches, with many of them too close to call. The stand-out tie is the match between former champions Sean McLaughlin and Jamie Sinnamon.

The Club Championship promises to be an exciting affair with some excellent golf on show; spectators are welcome to take in the action.
