Gourock vice-captain Neil Beaton presenting Sammy Ballantyne with the Burgh Trophy

THE Gents’ Burgh Trophy, which dates back to 1958, was played at Gourock Golf Club.

The field was full, with 170 players completely booking out the timesheet from 7am to 3pm. The club was delighted to welcome more than 40 visitors from 14 courses.

With the course in great condition and favourable overhead conditions, scoring was bound to be competitive.

Niall Gallacher set a high standard early in the scratch section with a one-over-par gross 74 which included a fabulous eagle two at the 16th hole.

In the end Niall’s score was to be bettered by a single stroke, Chris Carson from Innellan GC recording a level par round of 73.

Chris was through the front nine in one under par after racking up birdies at the 8th and 9th holes and, despite a slight stutter on the back nine with three strokes dropped to par between the 14th and 15th holes, Chris kept his nerve, including a vital birdie three down the last hole, to win the scratch prize with a score of 73.

Three players battled it out for the net prize. In-form Colin Miller, playing off eight kept a six off his card in shooting 75 for a net 67. Michael Cairns matched that score with very steady halves of 37 and 38 = 75 less 8 for a net 67.

The ever steady Sammy Ballantyne also shot 67 despite a punishing double bogey at the long 11th; Sammy quickly recovered from that with a birdie four at the 13th.

With three players on net 67 the count back methodology had to be applied which saw Sammy Ballantyne declared the winner, Michael Cairns as runner-up and Colin Miller in 3rd place.

The club thank Merchant Homes for sponsoring this event.
