Inverclyde Now Logo GOLF — Eric Blaikie Trophy Held At Whinhill

1 October, 2019 | Local

WHINHILL Golf Club’s Eric Blaikie Trophy was won by the team of Junior member Mikey Dorrian and Gent member John McGovern.

They returned a nett score of 67.5, in pretty miserable conditions, to edge out two other teams courtesy of a better score on the back nine holes.

The competition involved both Gent and Junior members, competing as two-man teams (one Gent and one Junior) in a Greensomes format.

This was the second attempt to play the event because of rain flooding the golf course on the original date. The weather on the re-arranged date was not all that much better. Heavy showers and, at times, poor visibility made it very awkward for all golfers. Four teams did very well to break 70. The attitude and determination of the Juniors who were desperate to play in the event despite the conditions was great to see. The course was in great condition and held up to the wet weather.

This is Mikey’s biggest golfing victory to date and is just reward for the hard practice he has put in this year – a year that has seen a massive improvement in his golf game. Mikey is the youngest Junior member with an official handicap in the club.

The victory is fitting for John as he is one of the club’s Junior Section coaches and puts a lot of time and effort in helping out with the club’s young golfers, and he has been trying to win this trophy as man and boy for more than 20 years!

In joint second place were the teams of Ross Peacock and Derek Church and Darren Church and Craig Keir with the team of Liam Moodie and David Adams in fourth place two shots further back on 69.5 with a nine at the fifth hole denting their chances of claiming victory.

The standard of golf on show throughout the day was generally of a very high quality.
