Inverclyde Now Logo GOLF — Championship Day At Port Glasgow

6 August, 2018 | Local

CHAMPIONSHIP Day took place at Port Glasgow Golf Club with 70-plus members taking part in the three championships competed for on the biggest day in the club’s calendar.

It stayed dry for most of the day with strong winds dictating scoring. Head greenkeeper Jim McCurdy and his team worked tirelessly to bring the course up to scratch following a difficult period of dry weather taking its toll. The course was back at its best and proved a great challenge for all competing.

After the morning round, Evan Conway was leading the club championship with a superb 71 followed closely by Ryan Gallagher and Steven McLeod. The afternoon proved tougher as winds picked up, with both Graeme Steele and Richard Docherty carding 75 as the low scores.

However Evan managed a late resurgence to card a 77, enough to win his second Championship title. Ryan Gallagher, also carding a second round 77, finished 2nd followed by Graeme Steele who was rewarded for his excellent second round.

In the over-50s McAuslan Championship, Iain McPherson came out on top with a nett 67 to beat James McClarty and David MacCabe both carding 68s.

The Handicap Championship was won this year by Paul Lappin with a nett 66, closely followed by Hugh Barilli and James Reilly both finishing on 68.

This was the first official event for the club’s new captain, Nicky Rodger who has bolstered his committee with a number of additional members including a new vice-captain, match secretary, secretary and general committee. Nicky told the members: “There is a real buzz around the club that has been missing for a few years.”

He stressed that he plans to attract new members and help improve both the course and clubhouse to serve the members and community. The club has membership discounts plus offers available for students and young adults. Visitors are welcome with great deals starting at only £10 per round mid-week.

There is also free coaching for junior members on Sundays with additional sessions during the school holidays. Anyone wishing to try out should pop up any Sunday at 10.30am and contact Junior Convenor Robert Ingram.
