Inverclyde Now Logo GOLF — 140 Players Compete For Gourock’s Burgh Trophy

8 August, 2018 | Local

THE long-established Burgh Trophy was competed for at Gourock Golf Club recently.

This was the 60th year the competition had been played and a full sheet of 140 people saw club members being joined by a high number of players from other courses.

The scratch prize was keenly contested with Paul Carroll setting the pace with a one under par score of 72 which included a brilliant outward half of three under par 33 comprising an eagle at the 1st and birdies at holes four and eight. Unfortunately Paul slipped back slightly in the back nine not helped by a double bogey five at the short 17th.

This allowed Robert Clark to pip Paul by one stroke with Robert having halves of 34 and 37 = 71 for a card that included an impressive five birdies.

In the handicap section, local member Colin McKenzie set a very fast pace playing off a handicap of 14 with an outward nine of only one over par. Despite slipping back slightly on the back nine, including a six down the 18th, Colin, pictured, closed out for 80 – 14 = 66 to beat Paul Carroll by one stroke.

The club is grateful for support from Caledonian MacBrayne for the tournament this year.
