Inverclyde Now Logo FOOTBALL — Update From Port Juniors Community Sports Club

2 May, 2018 | Local

2004s — The team took on West End Soccer in Glasgow with only 10 players available and a strong wind against them in the first half. The Juniors were three goals down at half-time, conceding a fourth early in the second half.

However with the wind now on their side, they pushed West End back and were gifted a penalty, which was converted.

More chances followed to bring the game level. It looked like the game was heading for a draw when one last effort from just inside the box proved the winner. Goals were scored by Aidan (2), Adam (2) and Aaron B

Girls’ Section

The Under-13s hosted Thistle Weir at Parklea on Saturday morning. This was a strong physical side and the girls needed to be at their best. There wasn’t much in the game to start with, with both teams starting well but the Juniors had the better chances. Mhairi and Erin were tidy in defence limiting the opposition chances.

The girls deservedly took the lead just after ten minutes and added more before half-time to make it Juniors 4-0 Weir Thistle. Neaveh came on for Erin in defence in the second half before moving over to the right midfield. Some of the passing between the attacking players Ellie Anderson, Casey Leigh, Roma and Julie was a joy to watch.

The defence was solid as usual with Mhairi in firm control. Elle Dinning didn’t have a lot to do but managed to pull off two cracking saves when called upon. The girls got another three goals in the second half. For the sixth goal, Darcy passed out of defence to Roma who set up Julie for her second of the day. The girls conceded no goals for the second week in a row. Casey Leigh, who created lots of chances for her teammates, got the last goal after Neaveh’s shot was saved by the keeper.

Roma was superb on the left wing and was creating all sorts of problems for the opposition, likewise with Julie in the right. There was some terrific skill from the young ones — there are four under-11s in the team and they have held their own so far in this league.

Player of the match — Roma Kelly | Scorers — Roma Kelly (3), Julie Brade (2), Ellie Anderson, Casey Leigh Findlay

The Under-11s lined up with Sienna, Roma, Julie, Amyleigh, Erin, Leah and Hayleigh. There were no subs. The girls were amazing and passed well. One of the highlights was Roma nutmegging the keeper against a strong St Mirren. Another touch of class also from Roma was a fantastic solo run.

The girls kept pressing and attacking and there was great team work It was hard for the girls in the heat with no subs and the effort that Leah and Erin put in was fantastic as they played games for the under-nines as well. The girls played Dumbarton, Drumchapel and two teams from St Mirren. Sienna did well in goal. Erin and Leah scored a couple of crackers — these girls are under-nine players and certainly do not look out of place.

Julie and Roma were amazing on the wings. Hayleigh is getting stronger every week and some of her tackling was excellent. Amyleigh was also slotting in well in defence. The last game was against St Mirren’s team number two and their coach let the Juniors borrow a players as the team was one short. This was great sportsmanship.

The Under-Nines lined up with Mia, Emily, Kate, Erin and Leah in the fun fives against two Morton teams, Dumbarton and Parkmoor.. There was some realy good footwork, communication and passing. The team worked hard and kept attacking. Scorers — Erin (15), Kate (5), Leah (3), Emily. Mia came close to scoring and was amazing in goal.
