Inverclyde Now Logo FOOTBALL — Update From Port Juniors Community Sports Club

27 April, 2018 | Local

2003s — The Juniors played Houston at Battery Park, taking a grip of the game early, trying to play with the ball on the deck, passing well. After 15 minutes, the Juniors got the breakthrough. From a throw-in on the right, Jack F floated a lovely cross-field ball to Seb. His first touch was precise and that took him past his marker and he fired a left-foot drive past the keeper into the corner.

As the half progressed, Jack W did not get tested in the Juniors’s goal and the boys looked a threat every time they went into Houston’s half. With two minutes of the half left, Jack F had a drive that the keeper spilled, and Callum had an easy follow up to make it 2-0 Juniors.

As Houston pressed in the second half, they put a ball over the top. Jack W reacted swiftly and slid out to gather as the striker lunged in. Jack F played another cross-field ball to Giacamo whose touch was sublime, taking out the marker. He strolled on and placed the ball past the advancing keeper for goal number three.

With five minutes left, the Juniors won a free kick, wide out on the right. Mark took the kick and swung in a tantalising ball. The keeper came to collect high, misjudged his leap and the ball floated over his out-stretched arms and under the bar for the fourth goal. Houston had a couple of chances towards the end with the best of these testing Jack but, at full stretch, he pushed the ball wide.

It finished 4-0, giving the Juniors four wins on the bounce, scoring 23 and conceding only two. This was a great team performance all over the park. Man of the match was Jack F.

Girls’ Section

The Under-Nines were in action at Parklea and won all their games, against Dumbarton, Drumchapel, Parkmoor and Morton. There was great team work from Emily, Erin, Isabella, Mia, and Leah. Erin scored 10 goals and Leah scored four.

The Under-11s played at Parklea with a line-up of Roma, Casey Leigh, Neaveh, Taylor, Erin, Kate, Leah, Hayleigh, Amyleigh and Sienna. They played five games, against Dumbarton (2), St Mirren (2) and Drumchapel. They won three and lost two, scoring lots of goals and having lots of fun. The girls who have just moved up — Amyleigh, Hayleigh, Sienna, Erin and Leah — did very well on the bigger pitch.

The Under-13s travelled to Barrhead having won their last two games. They started well, focusing on passing and retaining possession. Casey Leigh opened the scoring to put the Juniors ahead. Taylor followed shortly afterwards with a stunning strike from outside the area. The girls took firm control and further goals from Casey Leigh, Roma and Taylor ensured the girls went in at half time comfortable at 6-0 up.

In the second half, there were a few changes with Casey Leigh moved right and Ellie up front. The best 10 minutes of the game saw the girls unselfishly passing and setting each other up creating wave after wave of attacks. The girls pressed on showing no mercy to the opposition. Erin Stuart moved up front for the last 15 minutes coming close on a few occasions and eventually getting a couple of goals.

It wasn’t the busiest game for Neaveh, Elle and Mhairi but, when called upon, they dealt with the opposition attacks. Elle pulled off a great save with five minutes to go to confirm a clean sheet. This was a fine win for Port Glasgow Juniors girls.

Scorers — Casey Leigh Findlay (6), Ellie Anderson (4), Roma Kelly (4), Taylor Coulter (4), Erin Stuart (2) Referee’s player of the match — Casey Leigh Findlay.

The Girls’ Section is looking for players of all age groups, in particular between seven and nine-years-old. Coaches are also required. If interested, call Mags on 07908 206 262.
