Inverclyde Now Logo FOOTBALL — Update From Port Juniors Community Sports Club

28 November, 2017 | Local

2003s — The Juniors were back to league duties with a home game against Largs Thistle. The boys had a point to prove as Largs wiped the floor with them at start of the season.

From the kick-off, the ball was passed all the way back to Jack W in goal. He passed to Jason in midfield and, from there, three more passes saw it finish up at Seb’s feet nine yards out. He thundered the ball into the roof of the net with less than a minute on the clock.

For the next 20 minutes, it was all the Juniors with some great football on show. After a great passage of play, the ball fell to Max who buried it in the corner. The supporters and coaches were a bit edgy as the Juniors domination was not being converted into goals.

Largs started to get more of the ball in the middle of the park and had a few driving runs forward. One such run resulted in a free kick to them 20 yards out. Jack set his wall but the Largs player found a gap and fired his shot towards the corner of the net but Jack was up to it and pulled off a fantastic double save to get the ball to safety.

A few minutes later however, Largs got the break of the ball in the box and their striker got a shot away from about eight yards out. Jack saw it late and, although he got a hand to the ball, it was not enough to prevent the goal. Juniors were up 2–1 at half-time.

With a strong bench, the Juniors coaches were changing things around and every single boy played his part. As the second half started, with less than a minute on the clock, Juniors found the net again through a fine strike by Jason from the edge of the box. That goal seemed to spur the team into a higher gear.

The passing and movement was a pleasure to watch and the confidence was growing in a the boys. Jason was controlling the middle of the park and the Juniors’s back four was solid even when personnel were changing. Callum, Ben and Aiden all had excellent individual runs that deserved a goal at the end of them.

The grip tightened and, after a driving run from Aiden down the right, he found Max in the box who slotted the ball away for his second and the Juniors’s fourth.

With 20 minutes to go it then became the Ben show as he quickly netted three in about 15 minutes. Jack F had been off the field recovering from a bad tackle but returned to the play determined to add his name to the score sheet. He had a few excellent long-range efforts to no avail and then, after a slick move on the right, Jack picked the ball up five yards from the touch-line and drove forward towards the Largs area. He unleashed a shot with the outside of his boot from about 18 yards that soared into the far corner of the net with the keeper flapping at fresh air.

It finished Port Juniors 8-1 Largs and means four league wins on the bounce and 18 goals scored in the last two games.

2002s Port Juniors v Baljaffray FC

Port Juniors entertained Baljaffray in a Renfrewshire cup tie at Parklea. Conditions weren’t ideal as the Juniors kicked off but the boys were quickly into their stride pressing their opponents and controlling the early stages. They took an early lead with a brilliant strike from Nathan Fabiani from fully 25 yards which was simply unstoppable. Baljaffray however were gifted an equaliser after a defensive lapse which they took full advantage of with an excellent finish. The Juniors regained the lead with a lovely touch and fine finish by Lewis Bennie and soon it was 3-1 with a goal from Jack Brown.

In the second half, the Juniors continued where they left off and a brilliant through-ball from Jai Douglas set up Nathan Fabiani for his second which he duly took with a fine finish. Jack Brown added a fifth and Nathan Fabiani got his hat-trick with an excellent run and finish across the keeper into the far corner of the net. The final score was Port juniors 6 – Balljafrey 1. There were great performances as usual from the defence. Ross Stewart was dominant in a holding role as were Lewis Bennie in midfield and Jack Brown up front. John Brown was tireless despite coming back from a bout of flu. Nathan Fabiani put on a brilliant display scoring excellent goals
