Inverclyde Now Logo FOOTBALL — Update From Port Glasgow Boys’ Club

25 April, 2017 | Local

2010s (Black) — The team faced four tough games but the Port Boys dug deep and secured two wins — their first of the season — with two defeats. Zac, Aiden and Daniel scored the goals.

2004s Port Glasgow BC (Black) 6 v Cambuslang Thistle 3

The Port entertained Cambuslang at Parklea in a midweek fixture and ran out winners in a match they had to dig deep to win. A vastly-improved Cambuslang side arrived determined to put up a better showing than previously when the Port won easily on the visitors’ patch. The Port took the lead when Weston turned well in the box to fire home, however this was short-lived as Cambuslang equalised quickly. Despite the visitors having a few chances, the Port went on to score another three without reply, the goals coming from Smith, McAteer and Weston. Port had a 4-1 lead at half time. The boys were struggling to keep possession with a few stray passes in the second half and Cambuslang pulled another goal back. However this seemed to wake the boys up and they increased their lead again when Darroch slotted home after being put clean through on the keeper. They switched off again and paid the price as Cambuslang pulled another one back. The boys then decided to play the football they are capable off and Smith added to his tally to make it 6-3 to the Port, and the boys saw this out to the end.

Scorers: Weston (2), Smith (2), Darroch and McAteer

2004s Port Glasgow BC (Black) 3 v Parkmoor 1

The Port travelled the short distance up to Bishopton to take on Parkmoor, with the Port looking for revenge from a 1-0 defeat earlier in the season. The boys were up for the game from the kick off and took the game to Parkmoor with some fast passing and pressure being applied all over the pitch. The Port took the lead when Scott played a good free kick in behind the Parkmoor full-back for Emmerson to run on to and he got to the bye line and cut back for Creen to score on the edge of the six-yard box. The Port should have gone further in front but for a few saves by the Parkmoor keeper. The Port lost an equaliser from their own throw and it was back to being game on. Parkmoor put the Port under a fair bit of pressure but McDougall in goal and his defence of Scott, McPhee and McLaughlin were standing strong and preventing any further chances being created before the break. The Port were forced into a change at the break with Harkins replacing the injured Scott. The boys started on the front foot and went ahead in the first minute of the second half. McAteer played the ball down the channel and Smith and Baxter pressurised the Parkmoor defence into a mistake. Smith squared the ball for Weston to fire home. The Port continued to press and harass with the midfield of Emmerson, Creen, Madden, McAteer and Baxter now imposing themselves on the game and pressing Parkmoor at every opportunity, allowing Weston and Smith to play higher up the pitch and force the Parkmoor defence deeper and deeper and it wasn’t long before the Port added to their lead when Weston fired in his second of the game and the Port’s third. The Port introduced Darroch and MacDonald for Creen and Smith, and continued to create chances. With some better finishing the scoreline could have been added to.

This was a better performance from the boys than in midweek, but there is still room for improvement. Scorers:  Weston (2) and Creen. The boys travel to St Cadoc’s on Thursday and entertain local rivals Port Juniors on Saturday at Parklea knowing that victory in both games would see them crowned Paisley Johnstone and District Youth Football League tier three league champions.  | The team thank sponsors The Barber Shop (Greenock), Harkins Financial Services and Michael Stevenson

2004s (Orange) — The Port took on Kilpatrick at Parklea and, with the visitors getting the better of the Port a few weeks ago, the side were out to prove a point. The Port Boys started the game the brighter and should have had a comfortable lead going into the break after chances for Devlin Anderson, Declan Byrne and Patrick Gault. At the other end, the Port had keeper Aaron Keyes to thank for keeping the visitors out with a fine save from a free-kick. With the Port switching formation, Kilpatrick found it difficult to cope with the pace and movement of the wingers and forwards. Devlin Anderson caused problems down the left and Niall Brady played some telling balls down the right. However as the second half started, Kilpatrick caught the Port out with two goals in quick succession, the defence switching off and not clearing their lines.

With the Port heads going down, they went for broke and took a defender off and pushed Lyle MacDonald on just behind the front two. They won a free kick deep in their own half and Thomas McKeown punted the ball up to Declan Byrne who let it bounce once before striking the back of the Kilpatrick net. With the Port now pushing forward and really testing Kilpatrick, Declan Byrne raced clear but was judged to be offside. Callum Brown was next to test the Kilpatrick keeper when he was played through with the keeper pulling off a fantastic save to deny him as the match came to an end.  |  Coaches and players thank sponsor Marcus Humphrey
