Inverclyde Now Logo FOOTBALL — Update From Port Glasgow Boys’ Club

29 March, 2017 | Sport

2010s (Black) — The team had to work hard and dig deep as they were two players short. They fought hard and got a well-deserved draw in the end, the first game they were very unlucky.

2009s — The 2009s had six five-a-side games between both teams, winning four and drawing two. This team is looking for a couple of players to join the squad — anyone interested should call Craig on 07801 774116.

2005s –The team is holding a charity fundraiser in Holy Family Church hall on Saturday 29 April. It’s bring-your-own-bottle and tickets are £5 each available from team officials or through Facebook.

2004s (Black) — The Port entertained Glasgow City at Parklea and won in a convincing manner. The Port Boys found themselves one up inside the first two minutes through Smith, however Glasgow City equalised when a poor clearance was dispatched into the net by the Glasgow forward. The Port re-took the lead within a few minutes when Smith scored again before Glasgow City had a great chance to equalise as the Port defence was caught out with a long ball, but McDougall made a fine save. This seemed to waken the Port up and they went on to control the rest of the first half with Weston and Smith adding to their total, and with McAteer breaking his duck for the club getting his first goal. The Port took a comfortable lead into the break, but had they taken their chances the Port would have been in double figures before half-time. The second half saw the Port Boys create lots of chances again with Weston, Smith, Madden, Darroch and McAteer all adding to the score. The Port ran out convincing winners on the day.

Scorers:  Weston (5), Smith (4), Madden (2), McAteer (2) and Darroch  |  The team thank sponsors The Barber Shop (Greenock), Harkins Financial Services and Michael Stevenson

2004s (Orange) — The team took on league leaders St Cadoc’s. The Port started the game the brighter and soon took the lead with John Rodgers tapping home a rebound. The Port’s workrate was second-to-none as they stopped St Cadoc’s playing football. Every ball was contested and the middle two of Jamie Gilmour and Callum Brown started to control midfield. The Port had a few chances to increase their lead but just before the break St Cadoc’s got a break and pulled a goal back. In the second half the Port found themselves in front again thanks to a Lyle Macdonald goal. With so much effort being put into the game all over the park the boys looked like they were beginning to tire. When St Cadoc’s equalised, the Port looked deflated and, within five minutes, St Cadoc’s had taken the lead. The boys worked hard for an equaliser. As the game fizzled out the Port won a succession of free kicks but Thomas McKeown just couldn’t make them count. The boys can’t be faulted for their workrate and commitment as they gave everything but just came up short against a very good St Cadoc’s side. |  Port boys thank Marcus  Humphrey for their continued  sponsorship.

The team is on the look out for new players to help bolster the squad in all positions. Anyone born in 2004 with previous boys’ club football experience who would like a trial should contact Terry Fuller on 07799 118675. The team is also looking for some coaches to help next season. All coaches must have a PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) clearance and some coaching badges preferably.
