2004s Hillwood 2 Port Glasgow BC (Black) 3

The Port travelled to play second in the league Hillwood and returned with a deserved three points.

The Port began well and created a few early chances but were unable to make the breakthrough. It was Hillwood who opened the scoring when a switch of play found the Hillwood player in space and he shot home to put them one up. This seemed to jolt the Port but Hillwood doubled their lead shortly after when a Port defender trying to clear a corner could only direct his clearance towards his own goal, and despite McDougall in the goal getting finger tips to the ball he could only put it on to the post and the Hillwood forward reacted first to slam home. The Port then seemed to wake up and put Hillwood under pressure and pulled a goal back when Smith crossed to Weston who fired home to bring the Port back into it just before half-time.

The second half saw the Port emerge looking to take the game to Hillwood. As in the first half, the Port created several chances but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept Hillwood ahead until the Port were awarded a controversial corner. From the resultant kick, McDonald fired home to bring the Port level. The Port were now dominant all over the pitch and continued to press for the winner. McDougall in the Port goal had to look lively to snatch the ball from the Hillwood forward as he broke forward at one point. Defenders Emmerson, Harkins, McPhee and McLaughlin — and subs Scott and Baxter when they were introduced — were defending stoutly and allowing McAteer, Madden, Creen and Darroch to get on the front foot and pressure Hillwood and feed the ball to Smith, Weston and substitute McDonald. This resulted in the Port getting the winner with five minutes to go when the keeper saved Smith’s shot but Weston was on hand to slot home.

This was a fantastic result for the Port in the end and full credit to each player for their effort and determination to get back into the game and secure a valuable three points.

Scorers: Weston (2) and McDonald
