Inverclyde Now Logo FOOTBALL — Update From Port Glasgow Boys’ Club

22 May, 2017 | Sport

2008s — The boys were back in action this weekend against Gleniffer Thistle. Zac was making his debut and strolled through the early stages alongside Oliver in defence. The teams traded goals with Keiran and Leo on the scoresheet. Euan was barking his usual instructions from the goal and Sam was stretching his legs up front. At half time the match was finely poised with the score even. The second half saw Michael, Ben and Louis work hard to create chances and eventually Sam unleashed a couple of great finishes to gain a lead. With only a minute remaining, Gleniffer were clean through but Euan pulled off a fine point-blank save and then clearance after the striker hit the bar. This was the defining moment of the match. Sam completed the scoring with seconds remaining. This was another fine performance from the 2008 squad.

2005s — The 2005s put on their best performance of the season against Johnstone Burgh. Two tidy finishes from Calum Gray and the first goal of the season from Cameron Woods saw them earn a well-deserved victory.

2004s — Port Glasgow Boys’ Club (Black) 5 v Ferguslie 3

The Port travelled to play Ferguslie in the final league match of the season at Ferguslie Sports Centre. Although finishing their season with a win, this wasn’t the best performance from the boys. It was Ferguslie who broke the deadlock when their midfielder was allowed time and space in the middle of the park and he put the ball in behind the Port’s defence to let the forward get to the bye-line and cut it back for his team mate to slot home. This seemed to wake the Port up and, for the next 10 minutes, they played some excellent football and turned the game round to lead 3-1.  Firstly Weston broke down the left and squared for Smith to tap home. Then Weston got himself on the score sheet with a great finish before Creen added a third with a great strike from distance. However the boys seemed to think the game was done and switched off again allowing the opposition far too much space. Another ball in behind the defence allowed the forward to shoot across the Port keeper who allowed the ball to squirm under him, and the Ferguslie forward tapped home to make it 3-2 at half-time.

In the second half, the Port started as they ended the first and Ferguslie put them under pressure, without really creating any chances. The Port re-introduced Weston, who had to be subbed after being injured in the first half, in the central midfield and this seemed to settle them down and Weston got his second of the game as he broke from midfield and dispatched a high shot past the Ferguslie keeper to make it 4-2 to the Port. He got his hat-trick when a free-kick was lofted into the area and he cushioned his finish into the top corner. The boys became sloppy again in the final minutes and Ferguslie added a third when their forward was allowed far too much time and space to fire across into the far corner of the net.

The coaches can’t be too harsh on the team who have only dropped eight points all season and won the Paisley, Johnstone and District Youth Football League Division Three by 14 points.

Scorers: Weston (3), Smith and Creen
