2002s Baljaffray Utd 4 v Port Glasgow BC 1

Having comfortably won the home fixture earlier in the season, the Port travelled confident that they could do the same again in the return league fixture. Port were slow to get into this game and, a combination of poor communication, lack of passing and defensive lapses was enough to give the home side confidence. By 20 minutes in, the home team had been gifted two goals. The Port re-arranged personnel and tactics to try and stop the rot. This seemed to work and, although United extended their lead with five minutes of the half left, it was at least a goal they had to work for and create themselves.

Early in the second half Port conceded a penalty for a push in the box which the home team converted leaving the Port with a mountain to climb. Arron Conway had a chance to get the Port back into it when he beat the defender for pace but he could not find the finish to beat the keeper. Kian Jamieson did score with just under 20 minutes left with a nice chip beyond the keeper into the corner. The Port were then aggrieved with an offside decision after the ball was in the net. The play swung the other way and, for the second time in the game, Bobby Gallacher faced a penalty, this time pulling off a great save down to his left. Alan Blue then had a great chance close in at a corner but failed to get a touch on the ball. The United centre half was booked for hauling down Ross Black on the edge of the box as he homed in on goal. From the resulting free kick, Ross hit a good shot low down that the keeper did well to save. The Port touchline was angered with a two-footed tackle on Ross Black in the box that he had to jump over but the referee deemed fair. The last chance of the match fell to Scott Hendry who got his head to the ball from close in but was unable to direct it into the net.

Referee’s man of the match was Jai Douglas.
