Greenock and District Welfare League — Blackthorn Rovers 2-1 Chaplins

BLACKTHORN returned to league duty on Sunday with victory versus Chaplins.

‘Thorn took the lead when centre-back Andy Brunton netted from close range — his sixth of the season — before being awarded a penalty when Gary Strange was punished for a reckless tackle. The normally reliable Jamie McCabe saw his penalty saved excellently by McIntyre to keep the lead at a single goal.

After the break, Blackthorn found the net when McCabe made no mistake after being played in by Harkin. Just when ‘Thorn looked to be in control of the match, Chaplins grabbed a goal back through Bryson but there would be no more scoring as the league leaders secured another important three points, preserving the 100 per cent record this season.

Blackthorn line-up: McNeill; McGraw, Harkin, Wiggins, Brunton; Hunter, Jordan, Fry (Bradley), McCurdy (McAllister); Smith, McCabe.

This Sunday, Blackthorn take on Broomhill in a McShane Cup group match with a noon kick-off at Gourock Park. ‘Thorn have a midweek fixture next week facing OC Utd in the McD-76 Cup, kick-off and venue to be confirmed.
