Inverclyde Now Logo CYCLING — Local Riders In Action In Open Time Trial Events

3 September, 2019 | Local

JOHNSTONE Wheelers cycling club hosted their open 25-mile timetrial on the popular West Ferry course.

The event was the final Scottish 25-mile time trial to be held on the 2019 CTT (Cycling Time Trials) calendar, so riders were keen to sign up and race the clock in hope of personal best times.

The first racer set off at 8am, but, even at that time, the temperature was warm and there was not a breath of wind.

Lewis Beck

Local riders Lewis Beck, of Inverclyde Velo, and GTR Return to Life rider, Matt Hennon, were both on the start sheet with Lewis setting off at 08:01 on his first attempt at a 25-mile race. With his target to break the hour, Lewis exceeded his expectations stopping the clock at 59:25, an excellent first attempt at the distance.

Matt Hennon

As Lewis finished, Matt was on the start-line waiting to go. He rode all out, taking full advantage of the perfect conditions, crossing the line with yet another personal best time of 55:06, 21 seconds faster than the time set there in May earlier in the year.

Matt’s GTR team mates, Douglas Watson and Jamie Kennedy, made podium in first and third place, another great result for the racing team.

Meanwhile, conditions for the final race in the Georgetown league time trial were warm and dry but riders had a stiff headwind to deal with on the outward leg. Ecosse Performance Cycling Coaching rider Patricia Baird and GTR rider Matt Hennon had signed on for the race.

Both are regular supporters of the event and produce consistent, fast times on the 7.1-mile course just outside Houston. Matt rode well, crossing the line in 15:24 and securing fifth place.

Patricia Baird

And there was another excellent performance from Patricia, crossing the line in 17:25. This result secured her third place in the women’s category of the Georgetown league overall while Matt managed fourth in the men’s Vet 40 category and sixth in the league overall.
