EIGHT riders tackled the sixth race in the Alex Hunter Time Trial League.

Conditions on the 13-mile course were ideal, warm and dry with only a easterly breeze to negotiate on the return leg.

Patricia Baird was back and recorded a personal best with an excellent time of 32:27, proving that her rigorous training schedule on the road and in the Velodrome is paying off nicely.

Showing consistent form and crossing the line in first place with another impressive sub 30-minute time, was Paul Symington, recording yet another personal best.

The Inverclyde Velo 25-mile time trial championship was held on Sunday 27 May and used the CTT (Cycling Time Trials) 25 Time Trial District championship open event which was held on the West Ferry course.

Eight riders from the club had entered the event that would determine the 2018 club champion, including the current holder of the title, Alan Homes.

It was an early start for the 120 riders competing in the race with the first rider off at 8am. Conditions were dry but cool for the early starters, a tailwind on the outward leg with a gusty easterly making the return leg, which the riders faced twice, very difficult.

Paul Symington

Most of the Inverclyde Velo riders were out on the course within the first 30 minutes apart from Matt Hennon who set off around 9:30. Paul McGonigle was the first Inverclyde Velo rider to break the hour with a time of 59:40, but he wasn’t in the hot seat for long when Paul Symington came home in 59:15, despite having a mechanical problem out on the course.

With the rest of the club were having a coffee and a cake, Matt was still digging deep out on the course. He crossed the line in 22nd place with a superb time of 56:42, taking the 2018 25-mile championship title.
