Renfrew 32 all out

Greenock 34 for 2

GREENOCK started their 2019 season with the easiest of victories over Renfrew on Saturday.

On a dry but cold and blustery day, Renfrew’s batsmen were unable to throw off their early-season rustiness and were no match for Greenock’s attack. With two wickets falling in Sam Sanghera’s first over, the tone was set for the rest of the innings. Nobody reached double figures with Hussain top- scoring with just 7.

Greenock used four bowlers in the Renfrew innings and they all enjoyed success. Sanghera finished with 3 for 8 in 5.2 overs, Sehmat Pandher took 3 for 9, Rod Mountford 2 for 6 and Neil Flack 1 for 8 as the Renfrew innings was all over in 18.2 overs.

Greenock did not waste much time in knocking off the runs, losing only the wickets of the Pandher brothers as they overtook the Renfrew total in just 7.3 overs. Skipper Flack was unbeaten with 17 at the end.

This facile win did not really give skipper Flack many pointers for the season ahead and he would be particularly disappointed that his batsmen did not get a chance to play a longer innings.

Next weekend there are two more friendlies at Glenpark, with West of Scotland the visitors on Saturday and Hillhead on Sunday. The former in particular will present Greenock with a much stiffer hurdle to overcome.

The Hillend XI played a friendly with the West of Scotland 3rd XI (Hamilton Crescent) on Sunday and came off second best.

A young and inexperienced side struggled against their older opponents and could only muster 78 when they batted first. West overtook this total without losing a wicket but play continued for a while to enable more players to get match practice, with West eventually finishing on 141 for 3.
