Inverclyde Now Logo CRICKET — Greenock Avoid Relegation

GREENOCK’S Premier Division status for the 2018 season was guaranteed following the last weekend of the 2017 cricket season.

But it was the week’s wet weather which dictated the final outcome of the league placings rather than Greenock’s own play.

Only one of the Premier Division matches survived the week-long wet weather leading up to Saturday and that was in the far south of Scotland at Dumfries.

All other matches due to be played in the west central Scotland area from across six divisions of the Western District Cricket Union were off.

Greenock’s match against Clydesdale at Glenpark was called off early on Saturday morning with the ground sodden and wicket unplayable.

Then relegation rivals East Kilbride had their match against league leaders Prestwick called off despite desperate efforts to get the game on.

Needing to win to overtake Greenock and escape the drop into the First Division, East Kilbride’s hopes were dashed just after lunchtime when the match umpires eventually decided that there was no prospect of play as the outfield and wicket were too wet.

So Greenock’s aim of Premier Division survival in their first season back in the top division in the west of Scotland was achieved….but only just.

Now the Glenpark club must begin planning for the 2018 season.

Saturday’s match v Clydesdale was sponsored by ACT Construction (UK) Ltd and Clyde Carriers
