Galloway 2nd XI 207 for 7 (0pts)

Inverclyde 208 for 4 (10 pts)

INVERCLYDE beat Galloway 2nd XI at Gourock Park, achieving their highest ever run chase, with batsman Cammy Gunn scoring his maiden century in a fine attacking reply by the locals.

Galloway batted first and Tom Watson had the early breakthough when he bowled Martin in the fifth over. Bradley and Thomson then had a good partnership until Bradley fell for 64 to Ross Blair’s sharp catch at point off Paul Singh’s bowling at 85 for2, and Singh followed this two overs later by bowling Thomson for 18. The visitors’ middle order batted well, scoring quickly, taking advantage of some uncharacteristic Inverclyde dropped catches, but the fielding lapse proved temporary, as Tom Watson caught Cooper off Craig Watson’s bowling.

In his second spell Tom Watson took the important wickets of Brown (31), Mein (58) — helped by Gunn’s and Callison’s catches — and then held a caught-and-bowled chance to dismiss Stannus. Galloway finished on 208 for 7 after 40 overs. Inverclyde’s bowling and fielding had not been at its best, allowing the visitors reach their impressive total. However Inverclyde bowler Tom Watson leads the league bowling averages after his 4 for 23 in 10 overs, while Paul Singh took 2 for 28.

Inverclyde suffered early setbacks in their reply as the in-form David Thomson was caught, and captain Dave Cooke was trapped leg before wicket for 12, with Inverclyde at 15 for 2 after seven overs. However this brought Gunn, pictured, and Callison together for what proved to be the most telling batting partnership of the match as they attacked the bowling, with the visitors then helping in the task by adopting a defensive field to protect the boundary, allowing the batsmen to play into form and pick up useful ones and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

They took the score to 148 when Callison was caught at cover in the 30th over. With light rain falling, Inverclyde were ahead on the Duckworth Lewis calculation at 162 for 3 after 32 overs, but with the players staying on the field, Inverclyde still needed six an over to win. David Mudie and Gunn ran well between the wickets in the drizzle. The run rate increased until 15 runs were scored in the 38th over, taking Gunn into the 90’s.

He completed his first century for the club in the 39th over with a boundary through mid-wicket. But six runs were still required from the last over. Mudie (10) was run-out after an important support role, and Gunn hit the winning runs on the fourth ball of the 40th over to finish on a career-best 111 not out, at the same time rounding off Inverclyde’s highest successful run chase.

Senior and junior practices continue on Thursday and Tuesday evenings respectively when newcomers to the game will be made welcome.
