INVERCLYDE Goliaths senior kitted American football team have been successful in their application to become an associate side within BAFA’s(British American Football Association) National League.

Goliaths are one of only five teams in Britain successful this year. They join other Scottish clubs Highland Stags and Dundee Hurricanes; along with English competitors Darlington Steam and Kings Lynn Patriots in attempting to complete BAFA’s associate process in order to be granted entry into the 2019 National League.

Goliaths must complete at least five associate games over the next few months, three at home and two away, under strict conditions set by BAFA. The matches will be played under the watchful eye of a BAFA official assessor and official refereeing crew.

The first game of this process will be at home against the Highland Stags, who make the journey down to Inverclyde on Saturday 23 June. It will be played at Battery Park, kick-off time still to be finalised.

General manager Bud McFerren said: “We have been preparing the league formalities all year and getting our players game-ready. We hope to attract many more great people of Inverclyde to get involved whether it be playing, helping or supporting us on game days. There is still a long road ahead to gain full league entry for 2019 season and we need all the help and support we can get.”

The team are still recruiting players, new and experienced, young and old, if anyone wishes to join. Player Kevin McAdam said: “For anyone interested in the sport, or looking for something new, now is the best time to join Goliaths. The team is always looking to bring in new players so you would be learning alongside the whole squad who are a great bunch of guys, all very welcoming and eager to teach and help. There is a great team spirit here and it’s a fun and challenging sport to play.”

Inverclyde Goliaths are training every Thursday at 7.30pm at Greenock Wanderers’ grounds at Fort Matilda. The team can be contacted via Facebook and Instagram, at Inverclyde American Football, or by email on inverclydeamfit@hotmail.com.
