INVERCLYDE councillors have approved a development of more than 200 flats and houses to be built at the former St Stephen's High School site in upper Port Glasgow.
Housing association River Clyde Homes will build the properties at the site between Kilmacolm Road and Southfield Avenue.
Inverclyde Planning Board unanimously approved five applications for a total of 170 flats and 54 houses for social rent.
Planning officials had recommended approval.
A document included with the applications stated: "The aim of the development is to provide much-needed homes to the area through the provision of a variety of house types and sizes to cater for the diverse requirements of the community."
The flats will have one or two bedrooms and will be in three or four storey blocks. The houses will be in terraces or semi-detached.
Demolition of the school buildings is under way.
St Stephen's High is now part of the joint school campus in Kilmacolm Road which opened several years ago.
