WEMYSS Bay Makes It Into Book's Top 10 British Railway Stations

WEMYSS Bay Station is among the top 10 in the UK according to a major new book -- and even features on the cover of 'Britain’s 100 Best Railway Stations'.

Best-selling historian Simon Jenkins has travelled the length and breadth of the UK, rating stations on their architecture, ambience and historical significance, narrowing down the list from 2,563.

Wemyss Bay was chosen for its stunning Edwardian building. Built to cater for holidaymakers heading from the Glasgow to resorts on the Clyde, the station features a covered promenade from the platforms to the adjacent ferry terminal.

Jenkins, founder of the Railway Heritage Trust, describes the history, geography, design and significance of each of the 100 stations; explores their role in the national imagination; champions the engineers, architects and rival companies that made them possible; and tells the story behind their development.

The only other Scottish station in the top 10 is the one at the other end of the Wemyss Bay line -- Glasgow Central.

A number of other Scottish stations made it into the top 100 -- Aviemore, Edinburgh Waverley, Gleneagles, Glenfinnan, Perth, Pitlochry, Rannoch and Stirling.
