TWO In Court Accused Of Abducting And Murdering Margaret Fleming

Margaret Fleming, and the house at Inverkip that police searched as part of the investigation into her disappearance

TWO people have appeared in court charged with the abduction and murder of missing Inverclyde woman Margaret Fleming.

Edward Cairney (76) and Avril Jones (57), both of Greenock, appeared in private at Greenock Sheriff Court today.

As well as murder and abduction charges, they are also accused of attempting to defeat the ends of justice and fraud.

Neither made any plea and both were remanded in custody.

The case was continued for further examination. The pair are expected to appear in court again in eight days.

A search for Margaret, who had learning difficulties, was started a year ago but police have said the last independent sighting of her was in 1999 when she was 19.

It is believed Margaret lived with her father in Port Glasgow before he died in October 1995. She then lived with her grandparents and mother but is said to have moved in with carers, who were close family friends, in 1997.

An extensive search of a house at Inverkip that Margaret was believed to have been living in was conducted by police after she was reported missing.
