PROMOTION -- Open Day At Royal Gourock Yacht Club

ROYAL Gourock Yacht Club is holding an open day on Saturday 18 May for people interested in learning to sail who are not sure how or think it may be too expensive.

The clubhouse and facilities in Ashton Road will be open to from 10am until late in the evening.

Visitors will have the chance to try sailing on one of the club boats, supervised by a qualified helm, or a member’s own yacht.

They can also take a tour of the clubhouse and its facilities, meet members and watch racing from the sun terrace with excellent views across the Clyde.

There will be a chance to sample the barbecue and bar menu and enjoy musical entertainment from one of the local bands which regularly perform at the clubhouse.

The club -- which is marking it 125th anniversary this year -- holds weekly yacht racing as well as special race events throughout the season. The cruising section arranges overnight and weekend trips for members to join in.

The club also owns six small sailing boats which are used to teach sailing to cadets (age 11 to 18) and adults.

Free on-the-water sessions are provided for people to try sailing before committing to an inexpensive membership of the club.

Friday night social sailing for adults is provided throughout the season, from May to September, and winter theory tuition tailored to beginners is provided by the same team they sailed with during the summer.

Numerous social events are also hosted throughout the year, including cocktail parties, dinner dances, barbecues, bonfire night and formal evenings. During the winter there are weekly quiz nights which are well attended.
