LEAGUE Table Success For St Columba's School, Kilmacolm

St Columba's School rector Andrea Angus with student heads of school

ST Columba’s School, Kilmacolm, has been ranked fourth in the Sunday Times league table of top Scottish independent secondary schools in 2017, and second in the West of Scotland.

The results were published in Parent Power 2018: Best UK Schools Guide and are based on 2017 Advanced Higher, Higher and National 5 examination results.

St Columba’s, a co-educational independent day school, caters for pupils aged three to 18 in its Early Years, Junior and Senior Schools.  The school achieved 82 per cent grade As at National 5 and 84 per cent A-B at Higher.

Andrea Angus, rector of St Columba’s, said the size of the school is one of its many strengths as, with around 700 pupils, each child is known by name and recognised as an individual.

Mrs Angus said: “Considerable effort is made to create an environment which allows us to identify and nurture the unique talents and skills of each pupil, and encourage each one of them to realise their full potential, grow and flourish.

"It is essential that the foundations are strong and reading, writing and numeracy skills are mastered early. We combine the pursuit of academic excellence with a range of opportunity and challenge to develop self-confident and independent young people.

"High quality teaching, a strong sense of belonging and the space to grow and achieve full potential is what we offer at St Columba’s.”

As well as consistently outstanding examination results, pupils achieve national success outwith the classroom in many sporting, debating and musical disciplines.

In the last few days two Senior VI pupils, above, have again secured two of the five places on the Scottish Debating Team to represent Scotland at the World Schools’ Debating Championships in Croatia next year. St Columba’s pupils have represented Team Scotland since 2009 in various locations around the world, from Athens to Bangkok to Bali.
