PUPILS at Lady Alice Primary in Greenock can enjoy their favourite books on new Kindle devices after the team from Amazon in Gourock made a surprise visit.

The school was given 25 of the devices plus a £2,000 gift card to purchase e-books, during a special assembly attended by Amazon staff.

Lady Alice Primary received the special packages as part of the company’s Kindle Reading Fund, a programme that sees Amazon employees nominate a school to receive literary support.

General Manager at Amazon in Gourock, Gavin Morrison, said: “The staff at Lady Alice Primary do a fantastic job in encouraging more reading among the young people in our community and we hope this donation helps the pupils experience new books while enjoying some old classics. The joy of reading is something we’re incredibly passionate about at Amazon and we’re keen to help local children broaden their literary horizons with this donation.”

One member of the Amazon team from Gourock who nominated the school for support is Colin Kepler, whose daughter is a pupil. He said: “Lady Alice Primary School does a great job increasing the literary skills of our young people and this donation will help even more local kids to enjoy books of all genres. It’s great that the team at Amazon in Gourock is able to provide this support and I know that the donation will be really welcomed by everyone at the school.”

His daughter Jayla (8) said: “I love going to the library, and reading on a Kindle will make it even more fun. I am really happy that we will be downloading new books in class and all of my friends are excited too!”

Gail Connick, head teacher added: “It’s our mission to encourage pupils to read –- not only for the educational benefits, but also in the context of feeding their imaginations and creativity. The gift card and Kindle devices will be a really valuable resource at our school and we’re over the moon to receive such great support from the local Amazon team.”
