A78 Coast Road Closing For Three Weekends

THE A78 between Wemyss Bay and Largs is going to be closed for three weekends in April for £1million resurfacing work.

Motorists face lengthy diversions as three separate stretches of the route -- adding up to around three kilometres -- are worked on.

Trunk roads contractor Scotland TranServ had given details of the proposed programme:

-- Around one kilometre of the road north of Largs will be re-surfaced from 8pm on Friday 6 April to 6am, Monday 9 April.

-- A further 1.1 kilometres south of Skelmorlie will be affected from 8pm on Friday 13 April to 6am on Monday 16 April.

-- Finally about 800-metres of roadway will be replaced at Wemyss Bay, beside the ferry terminal, between 8pm on Friday 20 April and 6am on Monday 23 April.

Alan Murray, Scotland TranServ’s principal road design engineer, said: “We’ve spoken directly to community councils and asked for their input and agreement in the scheduling and format of this extensive programme of work.

"Key stakeholders have also provided their feedback, allowing us to run these schemes closely together so that they can be carried out quickly, and completed ahead of the tourist and event season.

“The limited available road width of the A78 means it will be necessary to close the trunk road to ensure the safety of our workers and of the travelling public.

"This unfortunately will mean weekend diversions. We therefore ask drivers, and ferry passengers in particular, to carefully plan their journeys.”
