MORTON have appointed Gus MacPherson as first team manager until the end of the season.

The Greenock club announced that MacPherson will take up the role immediately, leading his first training session with the squad on Thursday morning in preparation for Saturday’s game against Dunfermline.

McPherson was previously in charge at St Mirren, Queen of the South and Queens Park.

In an update published on its website, Morton stated: “Having managed in every tier of the Scottish game, Gus brings significant experience to the role.”

Andy Millen will join the club as assistant manager.

The club thanked Anton McElhone for his service as interim manager saying: “Following the resignation of David Hopkin, Anton quickly agreed to take on a difficult task at a difficult time and approached his first managerial position with professionalism, honesty, and endeavour. He will remain in the employment of the club.”

Morton had climbed to sixth place following victory at Inverness on Tuesday but the club stated: “Despite the importance of last night’s result, the Greenock Morton board felt that experience would be crucial in the remaining eight games as we battle to maintain our Championship status and we are delighted to have Gus and Andy on board for that challenge.”
