MORTON chairman John Laird will be the main speaker at the Inverclyde Sports Personality Awards gala dinner this Friday (17 May).

Mr Laird has had involvement with the club since the mid-1980s and returned to Morton FC recently in a new role as consultant to the board at Cappielow, before becoming chairman.

He helped the club seal significant transfer deals between 1986-1997 and was also previously the club’s director of youth.

Outside football, he runs successful companies in the energy sector as well as within sports management and events.

Tickets to the dinner in Greenock Town Hall are available from Smiths Sports in West Blackhall, Greenock or by email to advising number and any dietary requirements.

The musical element this year will be provided by the Riverside Youth Band Quartet, comprised of senior band members Ash Paton, Katie Livingstone, Andrea Crumlish and Scott Crumlish.

Experienced players, they have enjoyed success at solo and ensemble level, including Riverside Youth Band’s double Scottish youth championship success in November 2023.

In March 2024, Andrea became a triple Scottish champion, winning the Scottish youth solo title. The quartet has already won silverware in its short history, and is the reigning West of Scotland Ensemble champion.

The awards recognises Inverclyde’s sporting talent as well as coaches and volunteers, teams and clubs.

Proceeds from the evening go towards making grants available to aspiring Inverclyde individual sportspeople to help them reach further heights in their sport.
