MCELENY Announced As General Election Candidate

15 May, 2024 | Local

FORMER Inverclyde councillor Chris McEleny will be the Alba Party’s candidate for the Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West constituency in the next general election.

Mr McEleny served as an Inverclyde councillor between 2012 to 2022 and was leader of the council’s SNP group.

He left the SNP in 2021 to join Alex Salmond’s Alba Party saying that the Scottish National Party had failed to prioritise independence. He serves as Alba’s general secretary.

He said: “I take no satisfaction in the demise of the SNP. Put quite simply, with support for the SNP dropping so sharply, they can no longer win in many constituencies.

“Alba Party believe that every election should be fought seeking a mandate for independence. I will be the only candidate on the ballot paper in Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West giving people the choice to vote for independence.”
