THE number of drivers caught for traffic offences in Inverclyde went up by more than a third, according to latest figures.

A total of 869 road offences were recorded by police in the eight months between 1 April and 30 November, 34.3 per cent more than during the same period the previous year.

Police chiefs state: “This is generally reflective of wider trends, with a 16.1 per cent increase in recorded road traffic offences across Scotland.

“In Inverclyde, a proactive focus on road safety and road crime has contributed to an increase in the majority of road traffic offence categories, including many of the ‘Fatal Five’ offences which most often contribute to road casualties (speeding, seatbelt offences, mobile phone offences, drink and drug driving, and careless driving).”

There were 30 road traffic casualties, eight fewer. There was one fatality, 11 serious injuries and 18 slight injuries.
