AROUND 50 people braved the cold waters of the Clyde for the fifth Royal West of Scotland Amateur Boat Club (RWSABC) New Year’s Day Dip and Swim.

A large crowd had assembled to see them go in from the beach at the club and along Greenock Esplanade.

The water temperature was 8 degC and the skies were overcast but with gentle winds.

Six swimmers in wet suits did a two-kilometre swim from the boat club beach to Madeira Street and back.

Twelve club members provided kayak support.

Marion Monk, pictured right, completed the Inverclyde New Year’s Day treble. In the morning she did the five-kilometre parkrun along The Esplanade, at noon she ran the Lyle Mile and then she did the two-kilometre swim.

The event was organised by RWSABC’s Open Water Swimming convener and is part of a range of open water swimming activities at the Royal West.

The season proper will start in mid-April when there is swimming each Thursday and Friday evening.

RWSABC also offers other water sports including kayaking, rowing and sailing.

The club also has a range of social activities for members and the public.
