ILLUMINATED Jellyfish Sculpture Is Latest Inverclyde Public Art Proposal

DESIGNS for a second new sculpture on Greenock’s waterfront have been revealed.

The installation by artist Tragic O’Hara will feature multi-icoloured, illuminated jellyfish.

A planning application has been made seeking permission to site the artwork on a grassed area beside the Waterfront leisure centre.

A statement included with the application explains: “The idea behind ‘Mechanical Animals’ is to show what the future might look like if we don’t take care of the world around us. We could end up having to invent robotic versions of animals for the jobs of species that are no longer here because of the way we treat the places where we live.

“The three ‘mechanical’ jellyfish will be constructed of steel and perspex with LEDs fitted inside the head of the Jellyfish. These will be powered by a solar panel attached to the top and will light up various different colours during the night.

“The steel and metallic surfaces used will reflect the lights making the structure look different every time you see it.

“There will be no moving parts in the jellyfish but the sculptures will be designed in such a way to give the illusion of movement, as if the jellyfish are swimming through the air.”

As previously reported, a proposal for “water flow-inspired bench seating arranged in a spiral pattern” nearby has also been submitted.

The sculptures are part of a project by active travel organisation Sustrans to enhance the path along the waterfront.

Both are pending assessment by Inverclyde Council planning department.
