SCOTTISH Water is to deliver a £2.2 million project to address longstanding sewer flooding issues on the A8 into Greenock.

The latest phase in a multi-agency approach will help alleviate the frequency and the impact of flooding which has led to the road being closed on many occasions.

A planning application has been submitted to Inverclyde Council for the construction of a screened combined sewer overflow (CSO) outfall at the Lady Burn.

New pipework will be installed under the A8 and into the watercourse on the opposite side of the carriageway.

Georgina Reid, Scottish Water’s corporate affairs manager for the west, said: “It’s not an easy project. More than 13,000 vehicles use that road every day and we have been working closely with Transport Scotland, Inverclyde Council, and other partners to develop plans to minimise any disruption.

“This is an important project and will deliver significant benefits to the area. We are committed to working with our stakeholders and the community as the project progresses.”

The project is in the final stages of design and will be delivered in a phased approach, with phase one beginning towards the end of the year.
