DRIVERS are being warned about disruption on the A8 as Scottish Water start investigative work ahead of improvements to tackle flooding.

A reduced lane traffic system will be in operation on East Hamilton Street, Greenock from Sunday 25 April for six days.

The contraflow, which has been arranged in liaison with the roads authorities, will be in two phases.

The first will involve reduction of the westbound carriageway to one lane on the stretch adjacent to Inverclyde Council’s depot and the IBM office from 25 to 28 April.

After that, the eastbound carriageway at the same location will be cut to one lane from 28 to 30 April.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys. Pedestrians are being advised that the pavement beside the westbound carriageway will be closed during this work.

Investigative work is being carried out ahead of a project, expected to start next year, which will improve the waste water infrastructure in the area and help tackle flooding on the A8.

This will involve trial pits being dug in the to confirm the location of existing services and access to manholes.

Georgie Reid, Scottish Water’s corporate affairs regional manager, said: “We appreciate that the work will impact road users but we believe they will understand as the investigative work and then the project itself will benefit the community by helping to reduce the risk of flooding in the future.”
