A LOCAL man has been presented with the British Empire Medal for his work with the emergency services.

James Bertram was awarded the honour in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List in June for services to policing and for his voluntary commitment to the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The investiture ceremony took place this week at the Police Scotland headquarters at Tulliallan.

Mr Bertram was presented with the award by Lord Lieutenant Sheriff Iona McDonald with Chief Constable Sir Iain Livingstone.

Mr Bertram is the national health and safety manager at Police Scotland and has completed 15 years’ service as a volunteer first responder for the Scottish Ambulance Service based in Largs.

He said: “The investiture was an amazing day and a very proud one.”

Mr Bertram was born in Greenock, moved to Largs in 2000, and lives there with his wife Liz. He still has many friends and family in Inverclyde and I was a pupil at Gourock Primary, Ardgowan Primary and Greenock Academy.

His work covers all aspects of safety including providing a 24/7 response at significant incidents. Mr Bertram was heavily involved in the policing challenges during the covid-19 pandemic.

In his volunteer role, James attended emergency calls stabilising casualties until an ambulance crew arrives. This has involved being called out from home at all times of the day or night and in all weathers dealing with potentially life-threatening incidents.
