COMMEMORATION of the 80th anniversary of the Greenock Blitz next month will be scaled back because of the pandemic.

Inverclyde Council officials state: “Due to ongoing covid restrictions on events and gatherings, a significantly reduced occasion to mark the 80th anniversary of the Greenock Blitz will take place on Friday 7 May.

“The provost, or his representative, will be asked to lay a wreath at Greenock Cemetery, in line with covid restrictions and physical distancing, and the chief executive, as returning officer at the count centre for the Scottish Parliament elections being held that day in Greenock, will lead a local minute’s silence to mark this significant occasion in the area’s history.”

Nearly 300 people died during two nights of World War Two German bombing raids in May 1941.
