GOLF — Port Glasgow Holds Annual Seniors’ Open

10 June, 2021 | Sport

PORT Glasgow Golf Club held its annual gents’ Seniors’ Open, which is open to all golfers with an official handicap, over the age of 50.

The players couldn’t have asked for better conditions with clear blue skies and temperatures soaring, in what was one of the hottest days of the year so far. The course was in superb condition, with the greens being freshly mown and ironed that morning by head greenkeeper Jim McCurdy and his team.

The competitive field of 63 was made up primarily of Port Glasgow GC members with a selection of visitors from neighbouring golf clubs.

In only the second game of the day, James Mitchell, a member at Port Glasgow, posted an impressive nett score of 58 to set an early benchmark.

This target would prove difficult to beat as player after player returned several shots worse off than James.

As the final groups completed their round, low scores of 62 from Howie Griffiths and a 63 from Colin McDowall weren’t quite enough and James was crowned Seniors’ Open winner for 2021.

John Donald of Whinhill GC carded the lowest gross score of the day with an impressive 71 to take the best scratch prize. Both John and his brother Stephen, also of Whinhill GC, carded the same score, however John just edged it with a better inward half.

The club committee thank all who attended and competed on the day.
