The unit before it was turned into a cafe

PLANNING permission is being requested for a Greenock cafe and hot food takeaway that has already opened.

A retrospective change-of-use application has been made for former bookmaker premises at 172 Dunlop Street, Barr’s Cottage.

A supporting statement submitted to planners explains: “D&C Foods Ltd. acquired the lease of the unit in October 2022 and began operating as a cafe and hot food takeaway (trading as the Barrs Cottage Cafe) soon after.

“The proprietors of D&C Foods Ltd. were unaware that planning permission for the
change of use of the unit was required.”

The statement continues: “Barrs Cottage Cafe offers teas and coffees and hot and cold food. Hot items include cooked breakfasts, fries, pasta, baguettes etc.

“The introduction of the cafe / hot food takeaway brings this unit back into beneficial use and contributes to the liveliness of the streetscape.

“There appears to have been no detrimental impact on neighbours. The proprietors are unaware of any complaints since the commencement of trading.”

The cafe has limited opening hours to 8am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm, Saturday (closed Sunday).

The application is pending consideration by Inverclyde planners.
