Andrew McDonald receives the Strokeplay Trophy from John Ferguson, Whinhill Golf Club captain

WHINHILL Golf Club’s top golfers battled it out over 36 holes on Saturday for the knock-out stage places in the Club Championship.

The last-16, quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played this week, culminating in the final which will be held over two rounds, this Sunday.

The Strokeplay Trophy was contested on Saturday in some very difficult conditions. After a 30-minute delay to allow fog to lift, players had to cope with constant drizzle for the first few hours. The rain got worse throughout the day and the wind picked up, making conditions challenging for the players.

The Strokeplay Trophy was eventually won by defending club champion Andrew McDonald who narrowly edged out former champion Sean McLaughlin by virtue of the best last round.

Andrew has now won the Strokeplay Trophy four times, with this the third year in a row he has secured the title.

The Club Championship promises to be an exciting affair and some excellent golf should be on shown this week at Whinhill, with spectators welcome.
