GOLF: Results For Whinhill’s Jimmy Lang Memorial Charity Open

15 June, 2024 | Local, Sport

WHINHILL Golf Club held the Jimmy Lang Memorial Charity gents’ greensome open trophy competition.

The team of Graham Colquhoun and Joseph Gordon from Vale of Leven Golf Club were crowned winners after returning an excellent net score of 62, with more than £1,500 raised for this year’s designated charity, Visibility Scotland.

The competition has been held for 40 years in honour of one of the club’s most respected members, with tens of thousands of pounds raised.

Jimmy died in 2007 at the age of 86. Most of his life was spent providing sporting activities in the Inverclyde area.

He served the football community for more than 25 years before serving the golfing community as match secretary of Whinhill Golf Club from 1970 right up until his death.

He was instrumental in the creation and running of many inter-club competitions, leagues and events.

Jimmy’s popularity amongst golfers in the Inverclyde area, once again, ensured a strong turn-out.

Graham and Joseph won the event by a single shot from the pairing from Greenock Golf Club of John McGovern and Tommy McGovern. The best scratch score of the day was returned by Whinhill Golf Club pairing Ryan Campbell and Sean McLaughlin with their return of 70.

Neil Gibson of Largs Golf Club made a hole in one at the 7th hole.

The competition was supported by main sponsor Rainbow Financial Consulting and was played over a course set up in immaculate condition with golfers meeting a hot and dry but breezy day.

The club thank Jimmy Lang jnr, Sally and Deborah, who took the time to attend the presentation. The continuing support of the family is much appreciated.

The club is also grateful to:

— Kerry, Heather and Millie of Inverclyde Leisure for all of their hard work behind the bar and in the kitchen.
