GOLF — Jimmy Barrs Junior Open Contest Held At Whinhill

26 August, 2021 | Sport

WHINHILL Golf Club recently held its Jimmy Barrs Junior Open competition, in very wet and windy conditions.

Lorne Rawson of Ranfurly Castle Golf Club was crowned winner of the 18-hole contest after returning an excellent Stableford total of 33.

Carlie Love of Whinhill Golf Club won the five-hole pre-handicap competition with a total gross score of 33, making history in being the first junior girl golfer to win that event.

The competition is named after Jimmy Barrs who has been associated with Whinhill for more than 60 years and has been a big supporter of the club’s junior section.

The club thank Jimmy for his support and for presenting the prizes. Scottish Golf Union vouchers were up for grabs for the overall winner and the first four placed competitors in the handicap and scratch sections.

There were also prizes at various holes for longest-drive or nearest-the-pin, with players receiving items ranging from umbrellas and gloves to golf balls and towels. Every junior received a goody bag before going out to play.

All were once again announced on to the tee by Tommy Holleran who has been a great supporter of the competition and the junior section for many years.

The course was presented in great condition with the greens in the best condition they have been all year. The weather was the real test however with constant strong winds and the occasional torrential shower.

The most impressive aspect of the day was the juniors’ attitude in battling the weather, with more than 95 per cent of the kids returning a score and having no complaints about the conditions.

The format of the 18-hole event was Stableford instead of the usual strokeplay to try and make it as enjoyable and as forgiving as possible for the young golfers, so they did not lose heart if they had a couple of bad holes.

Lorne edged out fellow Ranfurly Castle member Ben Love courtesy of a better back nine, with Ben’s consolation being the scratch prize.

The pre-handicap section involved playing over five shortened holes. The standard was excellent from all youngsters in this category, with the ages ranging from six to 13. Carlie won by two shots from Cameron Hanley also of Whinhill Golf Club.

Whinhill thank all the clubs who had juniors representing them — Gourock GC, Greenock GC and Ranfurly Castle GC. All visiting juniors were a credit to their clubs and are a testament to all the tremendous work being done in their junior sections.

The club thank the greenkeepers for their magnificent help in the organising and running of the Junior Open competition.
