GO-Ahead Urged For Young Mum’s Plan For Women’s Gym

PLANNING officials are recommending approval for a group personal training facility for women at premises in central Greenock.

Sophi Binnie of Do It All Coaching applied for permission to change the use of the glazier’s building at 55 Regent Street, beside Coral bookmakers.

Seven public objections have been received raising concerns including traffic and parking, but Inverclyde Council planning department is in favour of the proposal.

Councillors on Inverclyde Planning Board will consider the application on Wednesday.

Planners state in their report: “The proposal would bring a vacant unit back into active use and would provide community and economic benefits to the local area.”

Training sessions would be limited to one-to-one and two-to-one personal training or small groups with a maximum of five clients at any one time.

In a statement submitted to Inverclyde planning officers, the applicant explained: “I am a young single mother, teacher and personal trainer who has grown my fitness coaching business significantly over the past year.

“This application represents the next step in establishing a sustainable, professional space where I can continue to support my clients.

“The studio is intended to be a safe, private, and supportive environment for women and young girls, particularly those who may feel anxious or uncomfortable in large commercial gyms.

“This is not a public facility, but a private training space aimed at encouraging confidence, wellbeing, and long-term health.

“Granting this change of use would allow me to continue developing my business responsibly, while contributing positively to the local area through a low-impact, community-focused use.

“There will be no open-access gym use, no large classes, and no drop-in sessions. Client attendance will be staggered by appointment only, ensuring low footfall and minimal impact on the surrounding area.”

Hours of operation would be Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, and Saturday/Sunday: 10am to 2pm.
