PERMISSION has been given to remove the pews from the historic Old West Kirk building in Greenock.
The A-listed structure on the corner of the Esplanade and Campbell Street dates from the 16th century and was bought from the Church of Scotland by businessman Marco Medinelli in 2022.

A listed building application made to Inverclyde planners asking for permission to remove most of the pews from the main sanctuary has now been approved. The stage will also be removed and more toilets will be installed.
Officials stated in their decision report: “The internal alterations proposed are considered to present minor changes which do not impact any special features, decorative schemes and the plan layout of the building.
“The pews are fixings which add to the interest and character of the building however they are not original and there is evidence that they have been moved previously and can be easily removed and reinstated. The storing of them on site, for any future reinstatement, is welcomed alongside the making good of the floor following removal.
“It is considered that overall, the alterations are minor and preserve the historic character of the building and its reasons for listing yet also enable its sympathetic alteration and practical adaptation to accommodate its active and practical use of the building for public use.”
Historic Environment Scotland offered no objection.
The use of the building is listed in the application as being for occasional events.
The adjacent Pirrie Hall, which was also sold to Mr Medinelli, is now used by Inverclyde Vineyard Church for its worship services.
